Safety concerns are one of the main reasons for why people don’t bike more often or allow their kids to ride. The best way to address these concerns is to provide safer, car-free bicycle paths. Improved sustainable transportation projects also reduce the cost of driving, parking, and maintaining a car. More money in the pocket of local residents and local governments will reduce the need to build and maintain expensive roadways and public parking garages.
Thousands of children will have vastly safer and a more direct way to walk and bike to school with some 44 schools within 1-mile of the Rail Trail. Residents along Santa Cruz County’s coast will be able to bike and walk to work, errands, and to activity centers as half of the County’s population lives within 1-mile of the Rail Trail.
