RTC Approvals of Progressive Rail Contract and Funding to Study Capitola Trestle Hailed by Friends of the Rail & Trail
Friends of the Rail & Trail today hailed the actions of the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission, including:
-Approval of a new two-phase contract with Progressive Rail to continue existing freight rail service and add passenger excursion service in the second phase of the contract.
-Approval for up to $50,000 of Measure D funding to study the viability of upgrading or replacing the Capitola rail trestle to accommodate both rail and trail.
“Today’s vote delivers a win for hundreds of workers in Watsonville, for Santa Cruz County residents who want continued progress on a safe bike and pedestrian trail, and for commuters who want to keep open future transportation options such as rail transit,” said Mark Mesiti-Miller, chair of Friends of the Rail & Trail. “Residents of Santa Cruz County want to keep our transportation options open for the future. Today’s vote does just that.”
Mesiti-Miller added, “The RTC’s decision to study options for the Capitola trestle to accommodate both rail and trail demonstrates the RTC’s commitment to finding the best possible routing of the rail trail and to leveraging our tax dollars to the maximum extent possible. Through this study, we can move beyond arm-chair guessing and find out what’s actually possible.”
