Letter: We need rail to alleviate transportation costs
The recent Sentinel article “Santa Cruz County has state’s second highest poverty rate, report finds” points to our high cost of living as one of several factors creating severe financial hardship. One way we can reduce the cost of living here is to add more public transportation; passenger rail along our coast will help thousands of people reduce their travel time and expense every single day while adding opportunities for work and education. According to the Federal Highway Administration, “transportation is the second largest expense for most households after housing.” We voted for passenger rail (Prop. 116 and Measure D) to provide a solution to our traffic crisis that is both green and equitable (fair to everyone). We can’t let Greenway and Trail Now succeed in removing the tracks at a time when so many people need relief from bad traffic and the high cost of living.
