Letter: Transit along rail line only option that makes sense
There are only three commute corridors between north and south county: Highway 1 — jammed; Soquel and Freedom Boulevard — jammed and the Santa Cruz branch line rail corridor — idle. The unused rail corridor is a huge, obvious and extremely valuable transportation asset that begs for the addition of transit, along with the bike/pedestrian trail and other roadway improvements.
Those who advocate turning this incredible asset into simply a linear park for walking and cycling between affluent communities display no meaningful concern for either social justice or the future quality of life in the county. Cycling from Watsonville to work in Santa Cruz is simply unrealistic — e-bikes are not magic. While some might favor adding bus rapid transit there, rail transit will utilize the value of the existing infrastructure as well as provide variable capacity by simply adding or subtracting units without increased labor costs for more operators. Adopt Scenario B.
