Letter: County’s rail service is economically important

Your article on the RTC’s decision provides an aspect of the rail trail discussion that has received far too little attention. Watsonville councilman Felipe Hernandez’s statement reveals the economic importance to our county of providing rail service. In addition, given that 50 percent of the county’s population live within one mile of the rail-trail, ultimately providing both freight and passenger service will reduce the number of vehicles on Highway 1. It would be a shame if the heavily funded “trail only” group were to succeed in removing the tracks. Not to mention the fact that more than two-thirds of voters approved Measure D in 2016, which includes rail service. Let’s not let a small, wealthy, group overturn the will of county voters.  — Robert deFreitas, Santa Cruz  (Posted in the Santa Cruz Sentinel, 6/19/18)
