Letter: Construction timeline a good reason for rail trail

Construction of the rail trail begins this summer on the Westside. Completion of this segment will allow safe access for bicyclists and pedestrians to 137 parks, beaches and schools. Trail-only opponents can’t match this time schedule because their plan means a 7–year delay in breaking ground due to permit requirements and an $11 million debt to the state Transportation Commission. Rail trail engineering plans, permits, funding and approval from Santa Cruz, Capitola, Watsonville, Scotts Valley and the California Coastal Commission are complete. At 12- to 16-feet across, the rail trail will be the widest in the county. Rail with trail provides immediate safety for its users. Trail only means seven years of nothing. — Grace Voss, Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz Sentinel, 5/29/18)
