The mission of the Santa Cruz County Friends of the Rail Trail (FORT) is to promote, support, and enable the development of a rail with trail transportation system in Santa Cruz County.
FORT’s current focus is to support the construction of the 32-mile Rail Trail from Watsonville to Davenport. Click here for map of the rail corridor. To this end, FORT is garnering wide-spread community support for the Rail Trail through public education, outreach, advocacy and fundraising. Education and outreach activities have included tabling at community events, distributing informational pamphlets, print advertisements, as well as presenting at a variety of meetings and events. FORT works in partnership with the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission, the owner and operator of the Santa Cruz Rail line, to raise funds to construct the Rail Trail.
Ecology Action (EA), an established Santa Cruz non-profit organization overseeing a diversity of environmental services and partnerships, is FORT’s fiscal sponsor. The alliance with EA allows FORT immediate access to administrative infrastructure such as record keeping, grant and fundraising assistance, organizational development, and office space. EA has provided staff support for FORT since 2011 and continues to play a major role in FORT’s work.
