The Santa Cruz County Friends of the Rail & Trail (FORT) is a community-based organization that has been working for over 10 years to support the construction of the 32-mile Rail Trail from Watsonville to Davenport. The Rail Trail will form the main spine of the Santa Cruz County section of the 50-mile Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail Network. When completed, the entire Network will reach from Pacific Grove in Monterey to the Santa Cruz/San Mateo County line.
FORT is fiscally sponsored by Ecology Action, an environmental non-profit founded in 1970 and the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) is the owner and operator of the Santa Cruz Rail line.
FORT is working to educate the public about the benefits and need of the Rail Trail and works in partnership with the RTC to raise funds to construct the Rail Trail. The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail Network Master Plan identifies 20 segments to be built as funding becomes available.
